Thai Studies

The School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, based within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures, has offered MA Research scholarships annually in Thai Studies since 2005. This is thanks to their strong relationships with five consecutive Thai Ambassadors to the UK, which helped secure £117k in funding from the Thai Foreign Ministry to support Thai Studies at Leeds. Embassy funding has also supported a student internship at the School for the last several years.

So far, eight students have used this support to successfully complete their MA by Research. One of these students won the Education Award in the category of Research on Thailand by a Non-Thai National, granted by the Anglo-Thai Society, by writing about the experiences of disabled people travelling in Bangkok. Two other Thai Studies PhD students have also published research papers in journals of Thai and Tourism Studies.

The Thai Studies department also runs the Thai Forum, which meets two or three times a semester to discuss original research projects and ask questions about interdisciplinary approaches in Thai Studies, promoting the understanding of cultural aspects and current issues in Thailand or neighbouring countries.

Upcoming events will be posted on the Thai Studies Facebook page.
