I am Professor of Biosphere-Atmosphere Interactions at the University of Leeds. My research demonstrates the widespread benefits of restoring healthy ecosystems for people, nature and our climate. In Southeast Asia my work has mainly focused on Vietnam and Indonesia. I have worked closely with partners in Vietnam to understand how local people use natural forests and the impacts of unsustainable resource use on forest quality. This evidence led to a project working alongside local communities to restore degraded natural forests. In Indonesia, we have worked to understand the connections between land-use change and peatland fires. We completed a cost-benefit analysis of the government's peatland restoration plans which confirmed restoration will lead to large economic benefits.
