Dr Joanne Yeoh - Music Performance

Dr Joanne Yeoh, Malaysian violinst and Leeds alumnus, performing in 2016Dr Joanne Yeoh obtained a First Class Honours in her degree with University of Middlesex in 1998. Her majors were both piano and violin. She was then awarded a Luther and Ernest Gaunt Scholarship for Strings, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Scholarship. She then pursued a Masters in Music Performance (MMUS) at the University of Leeds. In 2009, Joanne completed her PhD studies with Heriot Watt University, focusing on music and consumer behaviour.

While studying in the United Kingdom, she participated in several seminars and masterclasses held by prominent musicians. In 1998, she participated in the Aberystwyth Music Festival, the Edinburgh Summer Festival and the Aberdeen Music Festival. She also played an active role with the Sorrel Quartet during the Leeds Annual Music Festival 1999.

Joanne returned to Malaysia in 2000. She was then selected for the prestigious Asian Youth Orchestra, travelling to Vietnam, Japan, Australia, Korea and Hong Kong. In 2002, Joanne performed alongside Hong Kong superstar Jacky Cheung in his Music Odyssey Tour 2002/03. This comprised over 40 concerts around the world. The following year, Joanne was selected to perform with Taiwanese heart-throb David Tao in his Soul Power Tour 2003.

In 2008, Joanne was invited to play with another Hong Kong superstar, Alan Tam. More recently in 2024 she performed with Taiwanese singer-songwriter Sam Lee Shèngjié. Her musical performances are much sought after by many corporate and international industries. Among them are Sony, Panasonic, Omega, Tag Hauer, Mircosoft, HP, Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, BMW, Ferrari, Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, ESPN and British American Tobacco. Joanne has since launched 3 albums: Pulse of the Metropolis was released in 2005, After A Dream in 2013, and Life, Interrupted in 2021. Dr Joanne Yeoh performing on the violin to seated guestsThe accolades and awards Joanne has received include The Outstanding Young Malaysian Award 2004 for the category of Personal Improvement and Accomplishment, Martell’s Rising Personality Award 2008 and the National Academic Award 2012 for the category of Arts and Creativity. Joanne was also awarded the Malaysian Fujian Exemplary Performing Art Award in 2017, the Brand Laureate Grand Master Brand ICON Leadership Award 2017, Elegant International Business Award 2018/2019, and the McMillan Woods Global Icon Award 2019. More recently, she was selected as the Winner for the Professional Achievement Award in the Study UK Alumni Awards 2021. As an accredited examiner for Trinity College London examination board, she has travelled to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the Asian continent since 2005. Presently, she is a consulting editor with Musicae Scientiae and lectures as an Associate Professor at the Music Department of Universiti Putra Malaysia.
